Book: Boy in the Striped Pajamas?

In the book Bruno makes a tire swing and falls off it and cuts himself. The cook Pavel bandages it up for him and tells him that he used to be a doctor. When Bruno's mother comes home she thanks Pavel, but tells him that if anyone asks to tell them she bandaged him up. Why would she say this? Is Pavel Jewish?
