Do they check your pport at the border between germany and france?

I am going to drive to france from germany, I have traveled from germany to the czech republic driving and at the border their was a place where it looked like they checked pports but no one was there. Do they check pports at the germany/france border? Yes I have a pport, I am a united states citizen.
