How do i get rid of mice in my house?

I suspected I had mice but wasn't sure until I found a little mouse nest inside an old welly boot. There were 6 dead baby mice in it but no sign of the mother. I've bought a couple of the plug in devices that claim to deter rodents but do they work? what else can I do? I'm just too squeamish to put down traps.
