Have you ever been a homeroom parent for your child in elementary school? What does this mean?

Is this a good idea or no? I received a paper asking for volunteers for my child's clroom. I would love to be involved with her school, but am afraid that I'm going to get more than I bargained for..... anyone have experiences and can tell me more details about this?
