Problems with laptop screen?

Today when I turned on my laptop I discovered that the screen isn't illuminated! It all seems to be in good working order otherwise. I can just make out what is on the screen if I put a halogen light right up close to it but if I turn the lamp off the screen looks completely blank. Any ideas what the problem might be. It's a Hewlitt-Packard laptop and unfortunately no longer under warranty!
